Take a virtual tour of the SR 99 Tunnel Project

Keeping the public informed about our work to replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct is an important part of what we do every day. Our goal is to give you as much access as possible to this amazing project, which is why we regularly post updates, photos and videos of our progress. We even offer walking tours from our information center, Milepost 31, to a viewing platform that overlooks the pit where tunneling began in summer 2013.

Unfortunately, there's one frequently received request from the public that we're unable to grant: tours inside the tunnel. There are numerous reasons why this isn't feasible, most notably the need to keep construction moving forward without the distractions or logistical challenges that would come with bringing people into a very active work zone.

Since we can't get you inside the tunnel, we came up with the next best thing: a virtual tour. We recently worked with a photographer to capture 360-degree images at various locations in the work zone. They give you both close-up and wide-angle views that capture the complexity and enormity of this project, showing crews at work in a way you've never seen before. By the time you're done with the tour, you'll feel like you put on a hard hat and took a stroll through one of the largest and most complex projects in state history.

Overnight closure tonight

Contractor crews working on the SR 99 concrete panel rehab project will close all southbound lanes of SR 99 from South Atlantic Street to South Spokane Street 10 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18 to 5 a.m. Friday, Sept. 19.
