Summer Streets 2015!

Will you be in NYC this weekend? Be sure to swing by Summer Streets on 8/1, 8/8 & 8/15 to enjoy nearly seven miles of NYC's streets that are opened for people to play, run, walk, and bike!

Held on the first three Saturday's in August between 7am-1-pm, Summer Streets extends from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park along Park Avenue and connecting streets. All activities at Summer Streets are free of charge and designed for people of all ages and ability levels to share the streets respectfully!

Pedestrian Safety Improvements for East Harlem

Along the Metro North Viaduct in East Harlem, DOT's Citywide Concrete crews installed 29 new concrete neckdowns. Our team also installed 26 pedestrian signals along the viaduct. These improvements shorten pedestrian crossings, enhance visibility for all road users, calm traffic and update the lighting inside the tunnel to LEDs.

On Tuesday, July 14, NYC DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg was joined by NYC Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and Council Transportation Committee Chair Ydanis Rodriguez to announce the completion of this project. See more photos on DOT's Flickr page: www.flickr.com/nycstreets

Freight Update: NYC Truck Map

DOT publishes a full color, double-sided map featuring the City's comprehensive Truck Route network overlaid on top of the entire arterial street network, making it easier for drivers to locate specific streets and intersections. The 2015 NYC Truck Map is now available for download here or request printed copies via the mail at nyc.gov/trucks.

Hunts Point Clean Trucks Program

In support of increasing vehicle, pedestrian and bicycle safety on city streets, DOT's Hunts Point Clean Trucks Program will embrace this important initiative and require the following vehicle safety enhancements for all HPCTP trucks funded in any future grant awards.

Only vehicles properly equipped with the following vehicle safety enhancements are eligible to participate: side mirrors with a split mirror design; cross-over mirrors; passenger door down view mirrors; a backup alert system; and truck side guards. Learn more about this program for Bronx trucks here.

Barrier Beautification Applications Due 8/21

The deadline for submitting your fall 2015 DOT Art Barrier Beautification Application is quickly approaching! All applications must be postmarked by Friday, August 21st.

Artists and designers are encouraged to apply to beautify a set of barriers, used to separate bike lanes from traffic, located in one of NYC's five boroughs. Each barrier, at approximately 20 feet in length by 3 feet in height, will be painted using stencils that translate the design onto the site and with the help of NY Cares volunteers.
