Working on the minimum Adwords publisher costs, which in my opinion is usually three cents.

Maximum Income per click (Average)

The highest bids I have seen for popular keywords for example credit cards is around $6.00.

What is the Average Cost per Click?

In terms of the average cost per click, I would suggest around $0.30. I'm sure other publishers on this forum who would disagree with that figure. It does depend on your content.

Is Adsense a viable business?

Working on Adsense margins which looking at their recent accounts, they pay on average 27% of their revenue or income to their publishers.

On this basis the minimum you would receive for a click is one cent. The maximum working on the six dollar assumption, is $1.62. Please use these as a guide only.

The numbers I have quoted are for Google search, I would suggest when advertisers use 'content bids', the maximum bid I have quoted of six dollars would be much lower, as advertisers tend to place lower bids on the content network.

How much is a top Adsense Publisher earning?

Again based on my research, the New York Times website is the number one Adsense Partner, with 146 million visitors per year, using a 2% click through rate, this would give 2,920,000 clicks per year. Based on average click of $0.30, this gives an annual income of $876,000. Not bad income for pasting a few code snippets.

Now much would a small publisher earn through Adsense?

In terms of making money with Adsense, if you had 5000 visitors a day which is good (or exceptional) traffic for a small publisher, using the click through rate of 2%, each day you would receive 100 clicks, using the average of $.30, your income will be $30 a day. this gives an income of $900 per month, this would be the exception, not the rule.

Using a hundred visitors a day, which is more likely, for a small publisher. You would receive two clicks per day, giving an income of $0.60 per day, or average $18.00 per month.

N.B: the figures quoted are based on anecdotal evidence and assumptions.

If every publisher was honest about his or her numbers, I'm not saying that they are dishonest 'per se'.
