Mount Washington Banner

Dear Guy Ralph Perea Sr President of The United States II,

It's not too often that all of the employees of the Observatory get to spend time under the same roof. However, earlier this month we had the opportunity to do so. What's better than a slumber party at 6,288 feet?

Fellow Co-Director Mike Carmon and I made arrangements for a very special event this summer. We invited all of the valley employees to the summit for a night and had a variety of activities throughout both days. Meteorology experiments, observations, Jeopardy, and a scavenger hunt were just a few of the items on the agenda. But perhaps the best activity of all was getting to know everyone a little bit better. Did you know night observer Tom Padham is an outstanding cornhole player? Or that Director of Marketing & Events Krissy Fraser puts on a great WMWV morning radio show with Roy Prescott? Did you know Director of Research Dr. Eric Kelsey is really good at card games? These are just a few of the things that were discovered over the course of our Rockpile retreat.

At the end of the day when all of the deadlines, emails, phone calls, and non-stop "to-do" list items pile up, sometimes you just need to get away and spend time regrouping with the team. Luckily for us, we were able to make it happen on the summit!

Announcing Partnership with Profile Group and Return of the VIP Partners Program

Profile Group in Conway, NH has joined Mount Washington Observatory in a corporate partnership that includes a Subaru to be utilized by Observatory staff and a VIP Partners Program for members.

The VIP Partners Program offers members of the Mount Washington Observatory the opportunity to purchase or lease new Subaru or GMC vehicle at a special price through the Profile Group dealerships. To take advantage of the program the purchaser must be an Observatory member for a minimum of six months.

"We recognize the Observatory as an important iconic organization in the Mount Washington Valley and being able to collaborate on this partnership is a great opportunity for us and we are proud to support them," said Profile Subaru General Manager Dale Petell.

A Note from the President

The Observatory is beginning a program of both primary research and less formal, but no less scientific, inquiry into the changes in the climate that are becoming evident in the northern New England region. The initiative will include the following components:

  • Establishment of tuition-based working relationships with regionally-interested academic institutions for jointly-supervised senior undergraduates to develop proposals for, and then complete, basic scientific research for senior theses on topics in applied climate science.
  • Establishment of an electronic library resource to house and make easily available, both archival and current, primary and applied regional climate science research summaries, databases, and related informal and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Development of educational programs that simplify and objectively explain the mechanisms and possible outcomes of climate change in the region for educated lay audiences and primary and secondary school students.
  • Organizing and hosting a first, then possibly bi-annual, Regional Climate Science Colloquium to review/discuss both primary and applied regional climate science research and related effects of climate change on the region's diverse natural environments.
  • Working with established meteorological and natural science academic departments to form an active "collaboratorium" from which formal proposals for primary research on topics relevant to climate science can be formulated.
