Celebrating the Fourth of July 'Spanish-Style'
One of the first things you will notice upon arrival in Spain is the abundance of public holidays and vacation time. In fact, between federal, regional, and municipal holidays, Spaniards have fourteen days off a year, in addition to the government-stipulated vacation period of twenty-two days a year. So, with a total of thirty-six, Spain is one of the top countries in the world for time off. On the other end of the spectrum is the United States, which has ten federal holidays (observed at states' and private businesses' discretion), possible state and local holidays, and a vacation period which is about ten days on average.
