NYC Law: Drive 25 MPH

Today - November 7, 2014 - New York City's speed limit changed to 25 MPH unless otherwise posted.

Want to help spread the word to your friends? Join us as we change our Facebook & Twitter profile pictures today to the "Speed Limit 25" image.

Remember: If you hit someone at 30 MPH you are twice as likely to kill them then if you hit them at 25 MPH. This is why the speed limit in New York City is changing to 25 MPH.

Be Safe. Be Seen.

Did you know that 40% of crashes involving pedestrians occur between 3pm-9pm? Late night crashes are two times more likely to result in death.

Below are some tips for ways to be seen and be safe when traveling NYC's streets:
  • Walking? Stop at the curb. The sidewalk is the safest place to stop and check for traffic. And do what you can to be seen; wear a bright scarf or carry a colorful umbrella.

  • Biking? Be seen at night. A white headlight and red taillight are required by law from dusk to dawn. And wearing something reflective is really smart.

  • Driving? Keep your eyes on the road and slow it down. Looking away for just 4 seconds at 25 MPH is like driving an entire block with a blindfold on. #itcanwait

Weekend Walks

DOT helps local BIDs, cultural org's, local merchant associations and community-based groups to host Weekend Walks! These multi-block, multi-day community street events are hosted on commercial corridors that are temporarily closed to vehicles.

DOT provides movable tables and chairs, pop-up tents, and other materials that are shared among participating organizations. DOT will provide technical assistance with City permitting processes; help coordinate with relevant City agencies; and connect applicants with other Weekend Walks organizers to share best practices. There are also opportunities to receive funding to help cover qualifiying event-related expenses.

The deadline for org's to apply to host a Weekend Walk is November 21, 2014. For more details visit www.nyc.gov/weekendwalks.

Street Seats

Get free summer outdoor space to attract folks to your business by applying to NYC DOT's 2015 Street Seats program!

The Street Seats program enables seasonal public open spaces, generally including seating and tables, at locations where sidewalk seating is not available.

During warm-weather months, when the demand to spend time outdoors increases, Street Seats may temporarily replace a few parking spots in a neighborhood to create an attractive setting for eating, reading, working, meeting a friend, or taking a rest.

Learn more and apply by November 28, 2014: www.nyc.gov/streetseats.
