Elvis drafted, Dec. 20, 1957
On Dec. 20, 1957, a draft board told Elvis Presley to report for duty in the U.S. Army. An article in the following day’s San Mateo Times of San Mateo, Calif., reported the mixed feelings about the singer’s summons to service.

“Elvis Presley reports Jan. 20 for induction into the Army – unless Hollywood manages to have it put off eight weeks.

“Draft board greetings for the 22-year-old rock ‘n’ roll idol arrived yesterday. He accepted it with far more calm than did his manager or Paramount Pictures.”

USSR occupies Afghanistan, Dec. 24, 1979
This week in 1979, Soviet troops invaded Afghanistan. Intended to prop up a Soviet-backed government, the occupation lasted more than nine years. A United Press International article in the Dec. 31, 1979, issue of The Galveston Daily News of Galveston, Texas, considered the geopolitical significance of the Soviet move.

“Russian troops Sunday guarded the runways of Kabul’s airport, openly patrolled the capital’s streets and fanned out to three other major cities in the biggest deployment of Soviet troops abroad since the invasion of Czechoslovakia.

“In Moscow, the Kremlin pledged Sunday night to recall its ‘limited military contingent’ troops after the completion of their mission.”

President Clinton impeached, Dec. 19, 1998
On Dec. 19, 1998, Bill Clinton became the second U.S. president to be impeached. An article in the next day’s Winnipeg Free Press of Winnipeg, Manitoba, reported on the accompanying political fallout.

“President Bill Clinton, his presidency now balanced along a knife’s edge, said yesterday he will stay in office until the end of his term despite his impeachment by the House of Representatives.

“Clinton sought to underscore his legitimacy after the House approved two articles of impeachment – or charges – against him for perjury and obstruction of justice in attempts to conceal his relationship with Monica Lewinsky.”
