at the Villa St. Joseph in Baden, Beaver County, PA. Son of the late
John and Assunta (Iurlano) McRandal, he was born on Sept. 2, 1927, in
Lawrenceville, and lived most of his life in O'Hara Township. He grew
up in the Montrose Hill area of the township and raised his family on
nearby Powers Run. Hugh, known to family and friends as "Hutch", is
survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Roseann (Larbig) McRandal,

of O'Hara Twp., and two beloved grandchildren, Amanda and Ellen
DiMartini. Also mourning his loss are a large extended family, and
most particularly, his brothers John McRandal of Springdale and August
(Carole) McRandal of O'Hara Twp. He was preceded in death by one
brother Alfonso McRandal. Having served in the U.S. Army during the
Korean War, Hugh was a proud graduate of both Aspinwall High School
and the University of Pittsburgh. An avid athlete in his youth, he was
a member of the famed 1943 Aspinwall football team, and secured his
college education through an athletic scholarship from the university.
He was associated with the plumbing and heating industry in the
Pittsburgh area for over 40 years, forging an outstanding career in
sales with Pittsburgh Plumbing & Heating Supply Corp. A golfer and
sports enthusiast, Hugh was a season ticket holder and fan of the
Pittsburgh Panthers, Steelers and Penguins. Active in his community,
he devoted two decades to running the Powers Run Civic Association
Friday night basketball program where "Coach McRandal's" no-nonsense
attitude was legendary. Hugh was also active in his church having
served on its parish council. A life loyal Sigma Chi and 50 year
member of American Legion Post #77, Hugh will be remembered by all who
knew him for his positive perspective, zest for living, generous and
courteous nature, can-do demeanor and wholehearted devotion to his

Arch Society's newest inductee makes $25,000 estate gift

10/4/2011 --
HUGH MCRANDAL RECOGNIZED AT CHANCELLOR'S GALA
Former Campus Student Establishes Honors Award

Hugh G. McRandal Jr., a former student at Penn State New Kensington,
was inducted Sept. 30 as the 2011 member of the Arch Recognition
Society at the annual Chancellor's Gala.

McRandal, a marine forecaster for the Ocean Prediction Center of the
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, joins the 23 charter
members who were honored at the gala a year ago. The donor society's
membership is reserved for campus supporters who have contributed a
total of $25,000 to the campus.

The Upper Marlboro, Maryland, resident made an estate gift to the
campus in September to establish the "Hugh G. McRandal Jr. Honors
Award." The endowment will fund scholarships for campus students who
excel in the Honors program. Students in the program have a record of
academic achievement and a commitment to scholarship.

McRandal is a 1974 Penn State graduate with a bachelor's degree in
meteorology. He earned a master's in meteorology from the University
of Utah in 1980. He has been a marine forecaster with the National
Weather Service since 1989. The Ocean Prediction Center is one of the
National Centers for Environmental Prediction's original six service
centers. Through the prediction center, the National Weather Service
issues warnings and forecasts for portions of the North Atlantic and
North Pacific oceans.

The Arch Society was founded in 2010 and named for the arch that
stands at the front entrance to the campus. Designed by Henry
Noestheden and donated by Alcoa, the aluminum arch has been a campus
landmark since 1976. A symbol of the history and spirit of the campus,
the arch is a significant tribute to the campus's achievements. It was
the inspiration for the creation of the new society that supports the
needs and programs of Penn State New Kensington students.

"The arch sits at the top of a set of stairs and forms a portal to the
campus," said Barb Arnold, who is a charter member of the society. "It
leads new students upward to find their path, their adventure and
their new frontier."

McRandal received a print of a painting of the arch by Bud Gibbons,
professor of visual arts at the campus. The gala was sponsored by the
Hyman Family Foundation, the campus' 2011 Corporate/Foundation Partner
of the Year.

Membership in the Arch Society is open to alumni and friends of the
campus. For more information, contact Donna Speer, Director of
Development, at 724-334-6057.

During the 20 years that Hugh McRandal coached Friday night basketball
games for the Powers Run Civic Association, he didn't allow any monkey
business among the 200 to 300 children he oversaw each week with the
help of one assistant.

No shoving. Stay in line. And make sure everyone gets to play.

"My dad made sure everyone got a chance to touch the ball and
participate," said his daughter, Nancy DiMartini of Center. "He was a
very positive person and he never wanted to be a quitter. He carried
that to the very end."

Mr. McRandal, of O'Hara, died last Wednesday of complications related
to Parkinson's disease. He was 81.

Born in Lawrenceville, Mr. McRandal grew up with his parents and three
brothers in the Montrose Hill neighborhood of O'Hara, then raised his
family on nearby Powers Run Road.

Mr. McRandal, who was widely known to his family and friends as
"Hutch," attended Aspinwall High School. There, he was a member of the
famed 1943 football team, which went undefeated and unscored upon that
year.

"During the war years, the team helped inspire everyone," said Mr.
McRandal's son, John W. McRandal of O'Hara. "It was something for
everyone to rally around and take their minds off the war efforts."

After graduating, Mr. McRandal became the only one of his brothers to
go to college, attending the University of Pittsburgh on a football
scholarship. The school continued to provide his scholarship stipends
even after he separated his shoulder in his freshman year and no
longer could play, according to John McRandal.

"My father was always very grateful to the university for that," he said.

After graduating from Pitt with a degree in physics and serving in the
U.S. Army during the Korean War, Mr. McRandal went to work as a
salesman for the Pittsburgh Plumbing & Heating Supply Corp. He
ultimately participated in several of the biggest projects of the
Pittsburgh Renaissance.

After watching his own father, a bricklayer, travel from Michigan to
West Virginia to find work during the Great Depression, he wanted to
find something stable, according to his daughter.

"He always thought plumbing was a solid industry to get into because
it was recession-proof," she said.

Her father's first big job was selling the plumbing and heating
materials used to build Mellon Arena, then known as the Civic
Auditorium. He sold materials that helped build PPG Place, Four and
Five Gateway Center, and Three Rivers Stadium. He also sold supplies
to help construct buildings at Pitt, Carnegie Mellon University,
Duquesne University and UPMC St. Margaret.

During those years, Mr. McRandal enjoyed some of the buildings that
resulted from his projects as a season ticket holder and avid fan of
the Pitt Panthers, Steelers and Penguins.

Having lettered in basketball as well as football in high school, he
also began volunteering his time to the Powers Run Civic Association
on Friday evenings, running children's basketball programs at the
elementary, middle and high school levels.

Everyone who wanted to play got a chance, and her father would award a
half-point to any player who made a good pass, his daughter said.

"Everyone loved it -- that was really nice for kids who couldn't make
the basket, to encourage team spirit," said Mrs. DiMartini.

Mr. McRandal also was active at St. Edward Church in Blawnox, serving
on its parish council, and was a longtime member of Sigma Chi
fraternity and of American Legion Post 77.

In addition to his son and daughter, he is survived by his wife of 57
years, Roseann McRandal; another son, Hugh G. McRandal Jr., of Upper
Marlboro, Md.; two brothers, John of Springdale and August of O'Hara;
and two granddaughters.

A Mass for Mr. McRandal was celebrated Monday morning. The family
suggests memorial contributions to Villa St. Joseph, 1030 State St.,
Baden, PA 15005.
