OCOEE, FL—Florida's Turnpike announces lane closures and work zone
information for construction and maintenance projects in Central
Florida beginning Sunday, January 26.
Motorists should drive with caution through the work zones, and adhere
to posted detour signs and speed limits. Speeding fines double in
construction zones when workers are present. All paving-related lane
closures are dependent on weather conditions; rain or cool
temperatures may delay or cancel paving operations.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This $386 million project widens 11 miles of the
Veterans Expressway (Toll 589) in Hillsborough County, providing much
needed congestion relief to this regionally significant corridor.
The improvements, which are divided into five separate projects,
double the capacity of the highway from four to eight lanes by adding
two new lanes in each direction between Memorial and Gunn Highways and
include future widening from Gunn Highway to Van Dyke Rd. These
improvements complete the eight lanes of capacity for the full length
of the Expressway. Due to right-of-way constraints and surrounding
development, this construction represents the last physical widening
of the Veterans Expressway. The widening improvements include
reconstruction of 38 existing bridges and construction of three new
bridges.
The current widening project also includes a concurrent project to
convert the section of highway from Memorial Highway to Van Dyke Road
to all-electronic tolling (AET) providing non-stop travel to the
nearly 150,000 customers who travel the Veterans Expressway on a daily
basis.
By spring 2014, the Veterans Expressway will eliminate cash toll
collection in favor of all-electronic tolling, although roadway
construction will continue. After conversion, motorists who choose the
Veterans Expressway must have a SunPass prepaid toll account or they
will be mailed a bill and charged a monthly invoice fee. Nearly 80
percent of the 167,000 motorists who travel Toll 589 every day already
use SunPass to pay tolls.

Gunn Highway and Hutchinson Road.
This $11.2 million conversion project will consist of gantry

resurfacing the Suncoast Parkway in Hernando County from County Line
Road to US 98. This includes signing and pavement markings,
installation of high-tension median cable barrier, and roadside and
drainage enhancements that include raising the roadway north- and
southbound at the US 98 ramps and expanding the pond on the west side
of the roadway.
Lane, ramp and trail closures/detours will be noted in upcoming
traffic advisories well in advance of the work.
These projects include daytime lane closures.
The southbound roadway improvements are scheduled for completion by
September 1. The rest of the project will be completed in phases in
fall and late fall 2014.
OAK HAMMOCK TOLL PLAZA EQUIPMENT TESTING (MILEPOST 53)
The southbound, SunPass-only open road tolling lanes at the Oak
Hammock Toll Plaza are closed for testing of the new equipment being
installed as part of the Veterans Expressway conversion to
all-electronic, cashless tolling in early 2014. The lanes will be
closed intermittently during the test phase, and may include live
traffic testing as well. Additional lane capacity is being installed
under the mainline barrier canopy during the testing phase.
