IS 141 in Astoria won the global "Beat the Street" walking competition
- besting out schools in London and Shanghai!

** Queens Kids Beat the Street!
------------------------------------------------------------
More than 1,000 students from two middle schools in Queens, IS 141 in
Astoria and JHS 210 in Ozone Park, competed in the international "Beat
the Street" walking challenge. Students competing in the contest
received special cards that they swiped at one of three "Beat Boxes"
along their routes to school. They scored points with each swipe, as
well as scoring healthy lifestyle benefits from walking more. DOT
safety educators also shared tips with them about street safety, which
they put to good use as they earned points.

The competition lasted for four weeks during the fall. Our schools
proved exceptional, with IS 141 in 1st, and JHS 210 tying for 2nd
Place with a middle school in Shanghai! IS 141 received a grand prize
of $1,000 from Intelligent Health, the London-based contest creator.
Donations were also made to UNICEF on behalf of the students from both
schools to promote safety and good health for children in communities
around the world.

Two new New York City middle schools will join the global competition
this spring. Wish them luck against their global competitors!

** Make a New Year's Resolution to Walk More In 2014
------------------------------------------------------------
Walking is a great way to beat the winter blues, reduce stress,
increase your energy and strengthen your heart. Plan a walking program
for better health. Some tips to help get your started:

* Aim for 30-60 minute walks several times a week.
* Keep a journal to record your progress.
* Choose well-fitting shoes with good support and traction, especially
when sidewalks are slippery.
* Wear bright colors during the day and white at night so drivers can
see you. Retro-reflective clothing can make you especially visible.
* Check - and keep checking - for vehicles before and during crossing.
Always be alert!

** It's Icy Out! Walk Like a Penguin
------------------------------------------------------------
You don't see penguins slip and fall on ice. Why not?

* They walk flat footed (no high heels!) and take short steps
* They keep their arms at their sides, not in their pockets
* They concentrate on maintaining their balance

Stop winter falls. Do the penguin shuffle!
