A new species of legless lizard, the Southern Sierra Legless Lizard,
has been discovered living on southern California public lands managed
by the Bureau of Land Management's Ridgecrest Field Office.

Scientists have discovered four new species of legless lizards in
California, including one species that lives beneath the sand dunes
near Los Angeles International Airport.

Bend School Pupils Participate in Fishing Day

The thrill of hooking and landing a fish brought smiles of excitement
to children, when the BLM Redding Field Office and the California
Dept. of Fish and Wildlife hosted the first-ever "Fish Day for Bend
School" in the Sacramento River Bend area north of Red Bluff.

Feds To Investigate Water Bird Deaths at Solar Plants
(KCET, 09/19/13)
The Bureau of Land Management is forming a task force to investigate a
spate of unexpected deaths of water birds at remote desert solar
facilities, according to a BLM spokesperson. Though the membership and
mission of the group are not yet nailed down, Frank McMenimen of the
BLM's Palm Springs office says he expects the group will be meeting by
next week.

Day (NPLD) is the largest volunteer event for America's public lands.
NPLD is held on a Saturday in late September when thousands of
Americans volunteer to improve and enhance our nation's public lands.
National Public Lands Day 2013 will officially take place on Saturday
September 28, 2013. In BLM California, NPLD events will also take
place on other days during the fall.

California Desert District Hosts Section 106 Workshop for Tribal Nations

The BLM California Desert District hosted a Section 106 workshop on
the National Historic Preservation Act. Nancy Brown of the Advisory

included 30 representatives from 13 tribal nations throughout Southern
California.

694 Pounds of Debris Gathered During the Great Sierra River Cleanup.

Thirty-seven volunteers collected 694 pounds of debris from the Merced
River during the Great Sierra River Cleanup Sept. 21. A crew also
scrubbed graffiti from the bedrock shores on Bear Creek.

Alice Waters, Other Chefs Launch Petition for Fracking Moratorium

Berkeley chef Alice Waters was joined by dozens of other chefs and
food experts Wednesday in the launch of a petition asking Gov. Jerry
Brown to declare a moratorium on fracking in California. In the
federal realm, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management announced this
summer that it will conduct a full environmental impact study of the
effects of oil and gas development, including fracking, on federal
land in Central California that could be leased to energy companies.

'63 Topeka High Grad Biked To Reunion From California

A 1963 graduate of Topeka High School is cycling to his 50th reunion,
all the way from California. The day before he left on his trip,
Briery retired from his job at the Bureau of Land Management. He says
this has given him time to think about the rest of his life.

Early Storm Brings Much-Needed Rain: Moisture Increases Wildfire Containment

Coast Guard Rescues Three Women on Lost Coast Trail
