Subject: Frigid Lows and Record Highs
 |
Dear Guy Ralph Perea Sr President of The United States, It's officially "shoulder season" on Mount Washington: Still summer from an operational standpoint (as the Mt. Washington Auto Road is open to private vehicles), yet punctuated by periods of winter-like weather that hint at conditions to come. Last Thursday a cold front moved in, bringing below-average temperatures that bottomed out at 25°F on Friday and produced the season's first significant glaze icing event on Sunday. The frigid temperatures persisted through Monday, when the mercury began to climb into the 40s, averaging 51 on Tuesday and then setting a new daily record high of 63°F on Wednesday (the previous record of 60°F was set in 1947). Though warm by summit standards, the 63° high paled in comparison to temperatures in the valley below, which soared into the 90s. Significant temperature differentials are common this time of year, so be sure to check our Higher Summits Forecast before heading out on your next White Mountains adventure. Regards, Cara Rudio Director of Advancement

Students will compare model predictions with actual data recorded at sites throughout the region to determine the model's forecasting ability | New Collaborative Research Initiative Seeks to Improve Regional Forecasting
The most widely-used forecasting models are global in scope, unable to hone in on specific microclimates like those created by the complex terrain of the White Mountains. Eric Kelsey, Observatory Director of Research and Research Assistant Professor at Plymouth State University (PSU), is working with PSU graduate students to test a specialized, high-resolution numerical forecasting model that could vastly improve weather predictions in the Whites and other mountainous regions.
