** Public Art: Conversations About Our Shared Streets
------------------------------------------------------------
This summer, DOT Safety Education
(http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/about/safety-education.shtml) and
Groundswell (http://www.groundswell.org/) led teams of youth, and
created three community mural projects that will leave lasting impacts
in three neighborhoods. In addition to invigorating the streetscape,
these pieces also serve to stimulate conversations about our shared
roadways and what it means to have safe and livable streets.
"A mural means a story or a symbol behind a community—not just an
individual, one person or place alone. It has to bring everyone
together as one—that way they all stand for something."
–Andre Cuenca, Groundswell Youth Artist, Pitkin Avenue Mural
"Moving Along"
Atlantic Avenue, Underpass of the BQE near Brooklyn Bridge Park
Esteban Del Valle, Marc Evan & Youth Artists

** Research, Design & Action!
------------------------------------------------------------
For two weeks, the youth teams worked closely with DOT Safety
Education staff, learning about street design and traffic safety.
They made observations and gathered data about neighborhood streets
and the behaviors of pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, generating
the content for design sessions led by Groundswell.
The youth teams led formal concept pitch meetings to NYC DOT and other
community partners and, once approved, primed, painted and refined the
large community murals over the summer. Throughout the process,
students had the opportunity to engage in discussion with community
members and the media, where they led the call for responsible use of
the streets as pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers.
"Bronx Rising"
