NAVAL OPERATIONS INTO RED FLAG WARNING OF WASHINGTON STATE FERRIES

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for parts
of Western Washington including Bainbridge Island from 6 p.m. Friday,
August 9, through Sunday, August 11, at 11 a.m.. A Red Flag Warning
means that weather conditions are ideal for brush fires.
Thunderstorm development with scattered lightning is possible each
afternoon and evening in the Puget Sound and Southwest Interior
Lowlands from Friday through Sunday morning. The causal factors are an
upper low near the Northern California coast this morning that has
slowly lifted just off the Pacific Coast and is moving north combined
with an easterly steering flow. The National Weather Service reports

THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT OVER THE CASCADES AND EASTERN OLYMPIC
MOUNTAINS EACH AFTERNOON AND EVENING FROM FRIDAY THROUGH SUNDAY.
THROUGH SUNDAY MORNING...EASTERLY STEERING FLOW HAS THE POTENTIAL
TO BRING ABUNDANT LIGHTNING WEST INTO THE PUGET SOUND AND
SOUTHWEST INTERIOR LOWLANDS AS WELL.
The NWS cautions that dry terrain can easily catch fire with
lightning. In addition, thunderstorms often produce gusty and erratic
winds, with the strongest winds along the leading edge of the storm.
The combination of wind and lightning is ideal for brush fires.
