Predictive Services Discussion: Scattered showers and thunderstorms
will develop across Arizona, Utah
and eastern Nevada. Isolated thunderstorms will form over the
northwestern U.S. from northern California to
northwestern Montana. Showers will continue over far northwestern
Washington. Heavy rain and
thunderstorms will move through the Southeast. Temperatures will
remain very warm in the West, with some
cooling in the far Northwest. The Plains will continue very warm,
while mild conditions remain over the East. In
Alaska, warm weather will continue over most of the central and south,
with cold temperatures over the North
Slope. Scattered showers will develop in southern Alaska, with
isolated thunderstorms over the Interior.

SAFENET
Miscellaneous Category
SAFENET is a process that provides a method for reporting unsafe
situations on or off the fireline. The information
provided on the form will help collect important, safety-related data
to determine long-term trends and problem areas. A
SAFENET may be filled out at any time to report a valid concern about
unsafe situations in fire operations, as well as
document corrective action.
Discuss the methods for filing a SAFENET.
 Electronically by accessing the SAFENET website at safenet.nifc.gov
or linking to it through the NIFC
website.
 Hardcopy is no longer available or accepted.
Discuss advantages of filing a SAFENET through your supervisor versus
sending it yourself.
 Increase the chances of finding an immediate solution.
 Keeps supervisor "in the loop."
Discuss using SAFENET in situations other than fire.
 Prescribed fire
 All-risk
 Training
Where does a SAFENET go, and what response can you expect?
 SAFENETs are received and stored in a database in Boise. After a
SAFENET is received, the names are
removed. . The SAFENET doesn’t get posted to the web until 2 business
days after it has been forwarded to
the affected agencies for corrective action.
 Every new SAFENET is then forwarded to the affected agency’s
designated list of contacts, which usually
includes the National or Regional Safety Officer.
 It is each agency's responsibility to ensure that corrective actions
are taken.
Corrective actions should be submitted by people directly involved in
mitigating the circumstances that led up to
the unsafe situation. The submitter of the original SAFENET can use
the “Immediate Action Taken” block of the
SAFENET form to provide this information. Safety managers and line
officers or supervisors may also file a
corrective action to provide additional mitigation information.
Discuss using SAFENET to monitor safety issues other firefighters may be having.

SAFENET Notification

On Saturday, August 24, SAFENET will be unavailable starting at 8am
(MST) and last approximately one hour to perform server maintenance.
What is SAFENET?
Front line firefighters have another tool that provides a way to be
heard and get unsafe situations resolved. SAFENET is a form, and
process, that has been in demand by firefighters themselves. It is a
method for prompt reporting and timely resolution of safety and health
concerns encountered in wildland fire, all hazard operations, or other
related work environments. The information on the form assists in the
collection of important, safety-related data at the National
Interagency Fire Center, to determine long-term trends and problem
areas. The development of SAFENET was recommended in Phase III of the
TriData Wildland Firefighter Safety Awareness Study. Here are some
facts about SAFENET and how it works.

Individuals who observe or who are involved in an unsafe situation
shall initiate corrective actions if possible, and then report the
occurrence using SAFENET. SAFENET reports should identify unsafe
situations in wildland fire, all hazard operations, or other related
work environments.
SAFENETs should be submitted to the first line supervisor, whose
responsibility it is to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.
SAFENETs may also be submitted directly to the SAFENET system via:

Internet

http://safenet.nifc.gov

-or-

Phone

(1-888-670-3938)

SAFENET was originally intended for wildland fire operations, but can
be used to report on activities such as training, and all hazard
events.
Submitters are encouraged, but not required, to put your name on the
report. You don't have to identify yourself to fill out a SAFENET, you
can do it anonymously. All SAFENETs will be sanitized before posting
to the web. See SAFENET Protocols for sanitizing process.
There is no punishment or penalty for filing a SAFENET, nor is it mandatory.
SAFENETs related to incidents that have on-going serious accident
investigations will not be posted until formal investigation process
is completed. These SAFENETs will be sent directly to the serious
accident investigation team.
SAFENETs that do not meet posting criteria (see SAFENET Protocols)
will not be posted to the website.
SAFENET is not the only way to correct a safety-related concern; it
does not replace accident reporting or any other official agency
reporting method. It's simply an easy, quick way to report a safety
concern. It's also a way for front line firefighters to be involved in
the daily job of being safe and keeping others safe, by documenting
and helping to resolve safety issues.

The SAFENET system is intended solely as a tool for wildland
firefighters and fire management. Its objective is to provide a forum
for firefighters to voice their safety concerns, facilitate problem
solving, and to aid in identifying trends as they relate to
firefighter safety. Neither the National Wildfire Coordinating Group
(NWCG) nor its members, make any claims as to the accuracy or validity
of individual SAFENETs.

The NWCG encourages comments and suggestions for improvement of the
SAFENET program. Please share your ideas by emailing the
SAFENET_Administrator@blm.gov. Questions regarding SAFENET should also
be emailed to the SAFENET Adminsitrator.
