Seattle Mother's Day: Score FREE Parking at Waterfront Garages
Whether taking mom to the Great Wheel or a great brunch, the Seattle Aquarium or on an Argosy cruise, patrons visiting the Waterfront can take advantage of FREE parking this Mother's Day in Seattle. Helping to make the trip an easy one despite nearby construction, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and City of Seattle have teamed with several Waterfront businesses to offer up to four hours of free parking from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday, May 12.
Taking advantage of the deal is simple:
The Downtown Seattle Association's website has information about how to enjoy Mother's Day on the Waterfront. In addition to a map showing the locations of all participating parking facilities, it has links to participating businesses and attractions, which include: Argosy Cruises; the Seattle Aquarium; the Seattle Great Wheel; Ivar's Acres of Clams; Elliott's Oyster House & Cafe; Red Robin; The Crab Pot; Fisherman's Seafood Restaurant; The Salmon Cooker and Alaskan Sourdough Bakery.
The Mother's Day promotion is part of a broader strategy to maximize parking near construction on the Waterfront and in Pioneer Square. Since August 2011, WSDOT and the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) have been working to identify and implement strategies to mitigate on-street parking losses due to SR 99 tunnel construction. The agencies launched www.DowntownSeattleParking.com, an interactive, mobile-friendly website that features hours, rates and directions for nearby parking facilities in these neighborhoods. The site helps drivers locate convenient parking that matches on-street, metered parking rates.

Preparing for Bertha's summer launch
The countdown is on until Bertha, the SR 99 tunneling machine, takes her first bite of Seattle soil. After arriving by ship from Osaka, Japan on April 2, Bertha was unloaded in 41 different pieces and transported from Terminal 46 to storage areas near the 80-foot-deep pit where tunneling will start this summer. Assembly crews are placing the rear end of the machine in the launch pit first, to be followed by Bertha's front end and her massive green cutterhead. Tunneling will begin after Bertha is fully reassembled and tested, a process that takes about two months.
Our construction cameras offer regularly updated photos of construction, including shots of crews lowering Bertha's pieces into the pit. We've also added two new videos to our website: a simulation created by Bertha's manufacturer, Hitachi Zosen Corp., illustrating how a tunneling machine works, and a short video overview of Bertha's journey and the work we're doing to replace the SR 99 Alaskan Way Viaduct.
And don't forget you can track Bertha's progress on Twitter. Followers of @BerthaDigsSR99 receive regular updates straight from Bertha herself as she prepares to start digging beneath Seattle.
