Boston Bombing Suspect link into not only Chechnya but also Addis Ababa Ethiopia’s “jihadist” film affecting Muslim population

March 07, 2013
ADDIS ABABA: Muslims in Ethiopia are continuing to dealwith a February
5 documentary aired on the country's state-funded ETV station. The
film, which aimedto combine the protest movement by the Muslim
community in the country withthe militant organization in Nigeria,
Boko Haram.
The film, titled "Boko Haram in Ethiopia" denounced the Islamic
leaders of the now year-long protest movement for greater rights, but
also attempted to link the militant activities of the Nigeria groupto
a new wave of Islamic revival in the East African country, which has
led to riftsin the Ethiopian Muslim community.
"This film showed that we have a long way to come," said sheikh
Mohamed in Addis Ababa. "We are a tight community and this film really
aimed to disrupt that," he toldBikyanews.com.
His congregation has been on edge since the film aired, fearing a
backlash from the government and security forces, he added.
"It is important for us Muslimsto be honest and denounce this film,"
he continued.
Al-Jazeera reported extensively on the film, saying: "Muslims in
Ethiopia have been protesting the government's control of the Supreme
Islamic Council and its imposition of al-Ahbash , an unknown Islamic
sect across mosques in Ethiopia."
In a press statement last year, the bipartisan US Commission on
International Religious Freedom said: "The Ethiopian government has
sought to force a change in the sect of Islam practiced nationwide and
has punished clergy and laity who have resisted." Elected to represent
the movement, the accused Muslim leaders were arrested and charged
under Ethiopia's anti-terrorism law when negotiations with the
government failed last July."
A joint production of the Ethiopian National Security Agency, the
Federal Police and ETV, the film draws a parallel between a local
protest movement recognized for its peaceful acts of resistance with
Africa's most notorious terrorist groups such as Nigeria's Boko
Haram,Mali's Ansar Din and Somalia'sal-Shabaab.
But there are efforts, especially from young people to change the way
the religious debate is going.
In late October, a group of concerned students told Bikyanews.comthat
the ongoing tension between the government and Muslims should be ended
and they called on the government herein Addis Ababa to do more to
ensure that violence does not erupt again.
"We believe that the government is creating this tension and fear of
sectarian conflict in the country by not allowing the Muslim
populationto have their will in their own affairs," said the group
meeting at a cafe liken to "Starbucks".
