YOKOSUKA, Japan (NNS) -- NavalFacilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC)
Far East awarded a$9.9 million contract to Black Construction/MACE
International Joint Venture, Barrigada, Guam, Sept. 14 to perform
maintenance dredging on the small boat basin at U.S. Naval Support
Facility (NSF), Diego Garcia.
The basin was constructed in 1984 and serves as the harbor and pier
for smaller water craft, as well as a safe haven for smaller vessels
and water craft during inclement weather. Silt hasaccumulated from
erosion and coastal sedimentation which has built up over the years;
the project will restore the basin and entrance channel to the
original construction depth, ensuring adequate navigation depth for
vessels which use the facility.
"The dredging of the small boat basin is critical to ensure continued
operations for all small craft which utilize that facility," said NSF
Diego Garcia Public Works Officer, Cmdr. Michael P. Oestereicher.
Work to be performed includes dredging a volume of 144,000 cubic yards
of material from an area of approximately 114,000 square yards, and
the handling and disposal of the dredged material and dredged material
storage area.
This contract was competitively procured via the Navy Electronic
Commerce Online website, with three proposals received The project is
expected to be completed by April 2014.
