Railways posts 24.87% growth in commodity-wise

New Delhi: Indian Railways has generated Rs. 61,434.74 crore inrevenue
from commodity-wise freight traffic during April-December 2012 as
compared with Rs. 49,197.03 crore during the corresponding period in
the previous year, registering an increase of 24.87%. Railways carried
735.32 million tonnes of commodity-wise freight traffic during
April-December 2012, 4.32% higher compared with the corresponding
period in the previous year. The net tonne kilometres showed an
increase of 0.88% year-on-year.
For December, Railways posted total earnings of Rs. 7,491.74 crore
from commodity-wise freight traffic.
Transportation of 44.50 million tonnes of coal earned Railways Rs.
3,347.27 crore revenue in December, followed by Rs. 581.75crore from
9.46 million tonnes of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for
other domestic user. The Railways earned Rs. 674.78 crorefrom
transportation of 8.72 million tonnes of cement, Rs. 596.54 crore from
4.24 million tonnes of foodgrains, Rs. 403.16 crore from 3.45 million
tonnes of petroleum oil and lubricant, Rs. 440.40 crore from 3.01
million tonnes of Pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and
other points.
