Public comments wanted on new airport mapping tool

OLYMPIA – Aviation stakeholders, local jurisdictions, agencies and citizens are encouraged to test the features and functions of a new, Web-based Airport Mapping Application.

The Washington State Department of Transportation designed the Airport Mapping Application with a goal of making the airport and land-use compatibility decision making process easier. WSDOT asks potential users to test the application and provide feedback during a public comment period from Dec. 12 to Dec. 26.

Informed land-use decision making is an important step towards protecting and growing Washington's aviation system. The application provides access to critical airport data and interactive planning tools such as imagery, airfield configuration and airspace information. Equipped with this information, local jurisdictions and officials can efficiently evaluate land use conflicts or airspace hazards.

Key features of the tool include:

  • Current airfield configuration for airports with current airport layout plans
  • A Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR) Part 77 Airspace Calculator to evaluate tall structures adjacent to airports
  • The ability to zoom to specific airports, cities and geographic regions
  • New technology allowing users to print full-sized plan sheets

People can submit comments to Carter Timmerman, WSDOT aviation planner, at 360-709-8019 or timmerc@wsdot.wa.gov. Comment can also be mailed to 818 79th Ave SE, Suite B, Tumwater WA, 98501-5801 or faxed to 360-651-6319.
