The vessel was put into service on July 1, 2011 on the Port Townsend - Coupeville ( Keystone, NAS Whidbey Island ) route. The Salish served the Port Townsend-Coupeville run for the second summer in a row in 2012. In winter 2011 she spent about a week doing the inter-island run in the San Juans due to the MV Evergreen State being out of service. | CYCLONE IN AMERICAN SAMOA LIST MANY LOSS Posted: 14 Dec 2012 04:49 AM PST The Samoan government has declared a state of disaster after Cyclone ravaged the South Pacific nation, destroying buildings and causing flash floods. Police in Samoa say a number of children are presumed to have drowned after being swept away in a flooded river after the cyclone hit. Evan made landfall yesterday and caused widespread damage across the country, killing at least two people, cutting power, causing flooding and ripping trees out of the ground. Locals say it is the worst storm to hit the region in recent years and a state of disaster has been declared. There are now fears the storm couldintensify to a category five cyclone as it tracks across the north of Tonga and then moves onto Fiji. New Zealand's high commissioner toSamoa, Nick Hurley, says police have told him a number of children went missing near the main river in Samoa's capital Apia. "This is the biggest one I've been through and I've been through difficult situations in the Pacific (before)," Mr Hurley told Radio NewZealand. "The unpredictable nature of this one has made it quite different. Theforecast winds did not give any indication of how strong the impact was going to be." Many places in Samoa have only justrebuilt after being devastated by a tsunami in 2009. "Power is off for the whole country... Tanugamanono power plant is completely destroyed and we might not have power for at least two weeks," the Disaster Management Office (DMO) said in astatement. It said hospitals and other essentialservices were using standby generators, with water supplies also out and most roads cut off by fallen trees and power poles as hundreds of people languished in evacuation centres. In travel advice, Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs said the cyclone had caused "damage to local services and infrastructure, including communications and electricity services and Faleolo International Airport". "The Australian High Commission in Apia has closed until further notice due to storm damage," it said. The United Nations says international aid groups are ready to help if needed, with damage fromthe cyclone worse than expected. Cyclone track Evan continues to move north west away from Apia, but its progress has slowed to just under 10 kilometres per hour. It was around 70 kilometres off thecoast and is forecast to reverse itscourse later this evening, although it is not known if it will again cross Samoa. The Fiji Meteorological Service has warned the cyclone could threaten northern parts of Tonga on Saturdayand reach Fiji by Sunday. Authorities in Fiji have gone into emergency preparation as the cyclone threatens to head towards the country. Fiji's weather bureau says the storm could eventually become a category five cyclone - packing winds at its core of 360 kilometres per hour - and on its current path would hit both of the nation's main islands. Tropical Cyclone can have a high humanitarian impact based on the Maximum sustained wind speed and the affected population and their vulnerability. | simvastatin, Zocor - Alway check liver Posted: 14 Dec 2012 02:32 AM PST GENERIC NAME: simvastatin BRAND NAME: Zocor DRUG CLASS AND MECHANISM: Simvastatin is a cholesterol-lowering drug. It belongs to a classof drugs called HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, commonly called " statins ." Other statins include lovastatin (Mevacor), atorvastatin (Lipitor), fluvastatin (Lescol), and rosuvastatin (Crestor). Statins reduce cholesterol by inhibiting an enzyme in the liver (HMG-CoA reductase) that is necessary for the production of cholesterol. In the blood, statins lower total and low density lipoprotein (LDL) or "bad" cholesterol as well as triglycerides . LDL cholesterol is believed to be an important cause of coronary artery disease. Lowering LDL cholesterol levels slows and may even reverse coronary artery disease. Statins also increase highdensity lipoprotein (HDL) or "good" cholesterol. Raising HDL cholesterol levels, like lowering LDL cholesterol may slow coronary artery disease. The FDA approved simvastatin in Decembe, 1991. PRESCRIPTION: Yes GENERIC AVAILABLE: Yes PREPARATIONS: Tablets: 5, 10, 20, 40, and 80 mg. Orally disintegrating tablets: 10, 20, 40, and 80 mg. STORAGE: Tablets should be stored between 5-30 C (41-86 F). Orally disintegrating tablets shouldbe stored between 20-25 C (68-77 F). PRESCRIBED FOR: Simvastatin is used for reducing total cholesterol,LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides, and for increasing HDL cholesterol.In patients with coronary heart disease , diabetes , peripheral vascular disease , or history of stroke or other cerebrovascular disease, simvastatin is prescribed for reducing the risk of mortality by reducing death from coronary heart disease, reducing nonfatal myocardial infarction ( heart attack ) and stroke, and reducing the need for coronary and noncoronary revascularization procedures. Simvastatin 80 mg is restricted to patients who have been taking simvastatin 80 mg chronically (for example, for 12 months or more) without evidence of muscle toxicitybecause the 80 mg dose is associated with increased risk of muscle toxicity, including rhabdomyolysis . It is important to clarify that ALT and AST levels do not reflect the function of the liver, even though they commonly are referred to as liver function tests or LFTs. They only are used to detect inflammation due to injury or damage to the liver from any source. Simvastatin shares side effects, such as liver and muscle damage associated with all statins. Seriousliver damage caused by statins is rare. More often, statins cause abnormalities of liver tests. Abnormal tests usually return to normal even if a statin is continued, but if the *abnormal test value is greater than three times the upper limit of normal, the statin usually is stopped. Liver tests should be measured before simvastatin is started and if there is a medical concern about liver damage thereafter. Inflammation of the muscles caused by statins can lead to a serious breakdown of muscle cells called rhabdomyolysis. Rhabdomyolysis causes the releaseof muscle protein (myoglobin) into the blood. Myoglobin can cause kidney failure and even death. When used alone, statins cause rhabdomyolysis in less than one percent of patients. To prevent thedevelopment of rhabdomyolysis, patients taking simvastatin should contact their health care professional immediately if they develop unexplained muscle pain, weakness , or muscle tenderness. Statins have been associated with increases in HbA1c and fasting serum glucose levels as are seen in diabetes . There are also post-marketing reports of memory loss , forgetfulness, amnesia, confusion ,and memory impairment.
