SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ANCHORAGE AK
430 PM AKST TUE DEC 11 2012
AKZ101-111-121-131-141-145-121400-
...SIGNIFICANT WINTER STORM TO BRING MODERATE TO HEAVY WET SNOW TO
SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKATHROUGH WEDNESDAY...
A LARGE LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM OVER THE CENTRAL BERING SEA ISCURRENTLY
USHERING COPIOUS AMOUNTS OF MOISTURE NORTH AND EAST INTO THE SOUTHERN
MAINLAND LATE THIS AFTERNOON.AN EXPANSIVE AREA OF SNOW... FREEZING
RAIN... AND RAIN IS CURRENTLY MOVING ASHORE SOUTHWEST ALASKA AND WILL
REACH SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA TONIGHT. MODERATE TO HEAVY WET SNOW WILL
DEVELOP TONIGHT AND BRING SIGNIFICANT SNOW ACCUMULATIONS ESPECIALLY
FROM THE KENAI PENINSULA NORTH AND EAST... INCLUDING ANCHORAGE.
SOUTHWEST FACING UPSLOPE AREAS WILL LIKELY EXPERIENCE THE HIGHEST SNOW
ACCUMULATIONS... WHICH INCLUDES THE ANCHORAGE HILLSIDE... HATCHER
PASS... THOMPSON PASS... TURNAGAIN PASS... TAHNETA PASS... AND ALONG
THE ALASKA RANGE IN THECOPPER RIVER BASIN. SNOW ACCUMULATIONS UPWARDS
OF 12TO 16 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE IN THESE AREAS.
CONFIDENCE HAS INCREASED THAT THIS EVENT WILL REMAIN ALL SNOW FROM
ANCHORAGE NORTH AND EAST. HOWEVER... THERE REMAINS A SMALL CHANCETHAT
ENOUGH WARM AIR COULD SNEAK INTO THE ANCHORAGE BOWL TO CHANGE SNOW
OVER TO RAIN AT TIMES... ESPECIALLY NEAR SEA LEVEL. IF THIS OCCURS...
SNOW ACCUMULATIONS IN THE ANCHORAGE BOWL COULD BE LOWER THAN THE
CURRENT FORECAST.
AS MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOWFALL WINDS DOWN LATE WEDNESDAY MORNING IN THE
ANCHORAGE AREA... THERE REMAINS A GOOD CHANCE THAT PRECIPITATION WILL
THEN CHANGE TO DRIZZLE OR FREEZINGDRIZZLE LATE WEDNESDAY MORNING
THROUGH MID WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON. PRECIPITATION SHOULD THEN CHANGE BACK
TO LIGHT SNOW BY WEDNESDAY EVENING... WITH ADDITIONAL LIGHT
ACCUMULATIONS OF SNOW THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT.
