Airlines have cancelled flights and people have been evacuated from
outlying areas as Cyclone bears down on Fiji.
Tourists, including Kiwis, have been moved from some Fijian resorts to
the mainland and evacuation centres have been set up for peopletrying
escape the cyclone, expectedto hit with full force tonight.
Cyclone is building momentum as it pushes across the Pacific towards
Fiji after wreaking havoc inneighbouring Samoa.
Four people have died and up to eight are missing after the cyclone
struck Samoa on Thursday.
The Fiji Government said it was working with the tourism industry
toco-ordinate preparation and recovery efforts as the cyclone
approaches.
"We are concerned about the capacity of this cyclone and have
activated and mobilised our emergency response teams, disaster relief
centers, police and military forces," Ministry of Public Enterprises,
Communications, Civil Aviation & Tourism Permanent Secretary Elizabeth
Powell said.
"The safety of our community and our international guests is our main
concern, and we have established and stocked 300 emergency centres -
should they be needed."
Holidaymakers in Fiji's western outer islands, the Yasawas and
Mamanucas, had already moved back to the main island of Viti Levu and
others had decided to return home early.
A Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesman said New Zealanders
in Fiji were advised to follow any instructions from local
authorities, including any evacuation orders, and keep family in New
Zealand informed.
People in travel accommodation should follow the guidance of the
accommodation management and/or tour operators, he said.
Travellers intending to visit Samoa or Fiji were advised to contact
theirairline or travel agent to check whether flights or accommodation
booking had been affected.
Air Pacific has cancelled four of its flights scheduled between
Aucklandand Nadi and Auckland and Suva tomorrow.
A spokeswoman said it would closely monitor the cyclone and its
expected path and update schedules when more information was
available.
An Air New Zealand spokeswoman said that so far no flights had been
postponed or cancelled but the airline was monitoring the situation.
She said it did not appear that people were changing their travel plans.
Jetstar does not fly between New Zealand to Fiji but a spokesman said
a flight from Australia to Nadi had been cancelled.
WeatherWatch.co.nz. head analyst Philip Duncan said meteorologists at
the Fiji MetService predicted Evan would track north of Fiji but it
would still get "walloped" over the next couple of days.
"Evan is a slow moving high-end tropical cyclone. The scale only goes
up to five and is four, putting sustained winds at 200km/hand gusts to
280km/h.
"To put that in perspective, that's stronger than the same wind
speedsin the recent Hobsonville tornado and unlike the tornado this
cyclone this is covering a few hundred kilometres not just a few
hundred metres."
Some small low-lying communities and resorts could
suffer"catastrophic" damage, and some small islands could be entirely
submerged by the storm, Mr Duncansaid.
The storm could reach northern NewZealand next weekend.
"This is one for people in the northern half of New Zealand to watch
closely as it may impact some travel and holiday plans in the lead up
to Christmas," Mr Duncan said.
"We're not expecting Evan to be a cyclone if it does reach New Zealand
next weekend, but it may still bring gales and heavy rain - however it
may also slide down just east of us, so one to monitor." Weather in
