Dear AWS Community,

Our first global customer and partner conference, AWS re: Invent, has
come and gone. With 6000 of you from 62 countries in attendance, the
energy and excitement was amazing. Thank you. You can catch up with
the keynotes, sessions, attendee interviews and slide decks at the AWS
YouTube channel and Slideshare. Amidst the conference fervor, we
introduced Amazon Redshift and announced our 24th AWS price reduction
with Amazon S3 standard storage and RRS. We expanded features and
support across Amazon Glacier, ElastiCache, RDS, and VPC, to name a
few, and made additions to the Singapore, Sao Paolo and GovCloud
regions. We're ringing in the New Year with a fresh calendar of
webinars and training events. And mark your calendar for the Global
Start-up Challenge Finale Celebration in January.

NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS

*Introducing Amazon Redshift*
Sign up for an invitation to the limited preview of Amazon Redshift, a
fast and powerful, fully managed, petabyte-scale data warehouse
service in the cloud. Redshift offers you fast query performance when
analyzing virtually any size data set using the same SQL-based tools
and business intelligence applications you use today. It is certified
by Jaspersoft < http://www.jaspersoft.com/amazon > and MicroStrategy <
http://www.microstrategy.com/about-us/press/ >, with additional
business intelligence tools coming soon. Learn more:

*New Lower Prices for Amazon S3*
We have announced our 24th price reduction since 2006 with yet another
reduction on our Amazon S3 service. We've reduced the Amazon S3
standard storage and Reduced Redundancy Storage (RRS) prices in all
nine of our regions, effective December 1st. Our 0-1TB storage tier
in the US Standard region is now $0.095/GB, a 24% price reduction. And
we've made similar reductions across all of our storage tiers for
storage up to 5000TBs. We are happy to pass along these savings to
you. Learn more at <

*New Status Check Now Available for Provisioned IOPS EBS Volumes*
Amazon EBS announced a new status check – I/O Performance – for
Provisioned IOPS volumes, which tells customers how their Provisioned
IOPS volume is performing with respect to its target performance
level. With Provisioned IOPS volumes, customers specify an IOPS rate
when creating a volume and we provision that rate for the lifetime of
the volume, delivering within 10 percent of the provisioned IOPS
performance 99.9 percent of the time over a given year. The new status
check compares the performance of Provisioned IOPS volumes to the
provisioned target level every minute and assigns an appropriate
status. At no additional charge, we also offer two new 1-minute
metrics in Amazon CloudWatch for each Provisioned IOPS volume. For
more information on the new I/O Performance status check, please see
Monitoring the Status of Your Volumes <
http://www.amazon.com/gp/r.html?R=38RTXADOL1RSZ&C=PJQTR1K2CM8W&H=1PIFDSJNXTFCATRUFFZ9GQG9QJMA&T=TC&U=http%3A%2F%2Fdocs.amazonwebservices.com%2FAWSEC2%2Flatest%2FUserGuide%2Fmonitoring-volume-status.html
>.

*Amazon RDS Provisioned IOPS now available in Asia Pacific (Singapore) Region*
Amazon RDS Provisioned IOPS < http://aws.amazon.com/rds#PIOPS > is
now available for new database instances in the Asia Pacific
(Singapore) Region. Starting immediately, when you create new database
instances using the AWS Management Console or the Amazon RDS APIs, you
can provision from 1,000 IOPS to 10,000 IOPS with corresponding
storage from 100GB to 1TB for MySQL and Oracle databases. If you are
using SQL Server then the maximum IOPS you can provision is 7,000
IOPS.
In the near future, we plan to provide you with an automated way to
migrate existing database instances to Provisioned IOPS storage for
the MySQL and Oracle database engines. If you want to migrate an
existing RDS database instance to Provisioned IOPS storage
immediately, you can export the data from your existing database
instance and import into a new database instance equipped with
Provisioned IOPS storage.

To learn more and get started with Amazon RDS Provisioned IOPS, please
see the Amazon RDS detail page < http://aws.amazon.com/rds >, the
Amazon RDS User Guide <
http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AmazonRDS/latest/UserGuide/Overview.ProvisionedIOPS.html
> and the Technical FAQ <
http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AmazonRDS/latest/UserGuide/RDSFAQ.PIOPS.html
>.

*Amazon RDS now Supports Micro DB Instances in Amazon VPC*
Amazon RDS < http://aws.amazon.com/rds > Micro DB Instances are now
available in Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC) <
http://aws.amazon.com/vpc >. Amazon VPC lets you provision a private,
isolated section of the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud where you can
launch AWS resources in a virtual network that you define.

You can now choose to launch Micro DB Instances within your own VPC.
Additionally, the AWS Free Usage Tier now extends to Amazon RDS Micro
DB Instances running in Amazon VPC. For more information about the AWS
Free Usage Tier, please visit the AWS Free Usage Tier page <
http://aws.amazon.com/free >.

*Amazon ElastiCache Announces Auto Discovery*
Auto Discovery, a new way to connect to your Amazon ElastiCache <
http://aws.amazon.com/elasticache/ > cluster, enables automatic
discovery of cache nodes by clients when the nodes are added to or
removed from an ElastiCache cluster. Developers today must keep track
of the node endpoints of their ElastiCache clusters. Also, they must
update the list of endpoints manually to handle cluster membership
changes. Depending on how the client application is architected, this
might require shutting down the application and restarting it, thereby
resulting in downtime. With Auto Discovery, we are eliminating this
complexity. You only need to know a single cluster configuration
endpoint that is valid throughout the life of your ElastiCache cluster
and never changes as you modify your cluster.

As before, Amazon ElastiCache remains protocol-compliant with
Memcached, a widely adopted memory object caching system, so code,
applications, and popular tools that you use today with existing
Memcached environments will continue to work seamlessly with Auto
Discovery.

To get started you will need the Amazon ElastiCache Cluster Client
which will serve as your Memcached compatible client with Auto
Discovery capability. At this time we support Java. We will be
providing PHP and other language support in the near future. If you
would like to enhance your existing Memcached client with Auto
Discovery capability please see the protocol documentation <
http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AmazonElastiCache/latest/UserGuide/AutoDiscovery.ConfigCommand.html
>.

For more information about Auto Discovery, please see Jeff Barr's blog
post < http://aws.typepad.com/aws/2012/11/amazon-elasticache-now-with-auto-discovery.html
>.

*IAM for Support and Trusted Advisor Savings*
Customers can now access the AWS Support Center using their IAM
credentials create and manage cases, view their Trusted Advisor <
http://aws.amazon.com/premiumsupport/trustedadvisor/ > report, and
manage Support for Health Check cases. We are also happy to announce
two more identity related checks; MFA enabled on root account, and
password policy configuration. For more detail on how to configure
support access for your IAM users, please visit <
http://aws.amazon.com/premiumsupport/iam/ >.

In addition to closing security gaps and improving system performance,
the Trusted Advisor <
http://aws.amazon.com/premiumsupport/trustedadvisor/ > report will
proactively alert customers when opportunities exist to save money.
Savings can occur from releasing unused resources, consolidating
underutilized resources, or committing to reserved resources at
recommended levels. Customers who viewed these proactive alerts were
shown $28M in total saving opportunities and on average, these changes
have led to $2.4M in customer annualized savings per month.
