Construction to begin on new South Atlantic Street overpass
WSDOT recently awarded the construction contract for a new overpass at South Atlantic Street that will allow freight and other traffic to bypass a busy train track. Atkinson Construction bid $29.4 million, $6.2 million under our estimate. Construction will start this month, just as work on the new SR 99 bridges in SODO wraps up. The new overpass, part of the Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement Program, is scheduled to open by December 2013.New website makes parking easier in Seattle's waterfront and Pioneer Square neighborhoods
Parking downtown just got easier thanks to www.DowntownSeattleParking.com – a new interactive map featuring hours, rates and directions for parking spaces along the waterfront and in Pioneer Square. We launched the site last week to encourage visitors to spend time in two of Seattle's most popular neighborhoods. It's designed to help drivers locate affordable, convenient parking during State Route 99 tunnel construction and other local work.
Upcoming speaker series events at Milepost 31
Join us to learn more about the SR 99 Tunnel Project at our monthly speaker series (pdf, 715 kb) in Pioneer Square during the First Thursday Art Walk.
Sept. 6 - Walking tour view of the SR 99 tunnel launch pit
Project leaders will describe current work as crews are busy digging the pit that will be used to launch the 300-foot-long boring machine when it arrives in early 2013. This one-mile roundtrip walking tour will begin at Milepost 31 at 6 p.m. and provide a view of construction from the paved bicycle/pedestrian path to the west of the work zone.
Oct. 4 - Protecting buildings during SR 99 tunnel construction
Learn how advanced technology on our tunnel boring machine, in-ground sensors and robotic survey machines will keep a continuous eye on the ground around the SR 99 tunnel before, during and after construction. The presentation will begin at 6 p.m. at Milepost 31.
Waterfront Seattle comes into focus
In July, Waterfront Seattle hosted an event to share the conceptual design, including new renderings, and implementation recommendations for the new downtown waterfront. Check out the Seattle Channel video or visit waterfrontseattle.org to view the event presentation, strategic plan and other project materials.
You can contribute to the waterfront design and planning conversation on the project website, Facebook and Twitter. Also, look for the Waterfront Seattle information booth at fairs and festivals throughout the summer – including Rainier Valley Summer Streets on Saturday, Aug.18!
