Thinks to Keep in Mind as You Return Home
Incident: Sockeye Fire Wildfire
Released: 34 min. ago
STAYING SAFE WHEN ENTERING A BURNED AREA
After the main fire has passed and residents return to assess, repair, and rebuild their homes and outbuildings, significant hazards remain in a burned area. Residents can minimize their risk of injury to themselves and their pets by following these recommendations.
• Always wear protective clothing (firefighters refer to this as personal protective equipment or P.P.E.) This includes: leather boots with heat resistant soles,
(Vibram soles are required for firefighters and strongly advised for those
walking in a burned area) - long pants, not loose fitting at the ankles where
hot ashes or embers may contact the skin - long sleeves and gloves, in the
event of a fall on uneven ground, into an ash pit, or in the event you come into
contact with sharp objects. Dust masks are also advised, especially for those
with respiratory complications.
• Do not allow pets or children to explore or wander in a burned area.
• Be aware that hotspots and unburned fuel in the fire area may flare up unexpectedly.
• Avoid power lines and electric cables, and treat them as live until a utilities technician can determine they are disabled or repaired. If the power is out, check to see if the breaker is on. If there is still no power present, contact the utilities company.
• If you have propane tanks, close the valves and contact the supplier for an inspection.
• If possible, inspect your roof, walls and floors for remaining embers and extinguish immediately with water.
• High levels of bacteria may remain in damaged plumbing fixtures and outhouses, and wearing rubber gloves when doing inspections and repairs is advised.
• Dispose of hazardous materials properly.
• Do not use water that may be contaminated for washing hands, dishes, brushing teeth, making ice or preparing food.
