On July 23rd, 1965, the Coinage Act of 1965 was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson. The main purpose of the act was to alleviate the shortage of higher denomination circulating coinage which, being composed of 90% silver, was coming under pressure due to the rising price of silver.
