MISSOURI PROTESTS, BAN URGES RESTRAINT, RESPECT FOR RIGHT TO PEACEFUL ASSEMBLY
As protests intensify over the killing of an American teenager in
Missouri, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today urged all
parties to exercise restraint and for authorities to respect the right
to not involved in hate. Read more;
The Black Panther Party or BPP (originally the Black Panther Party for
Self-Defense) was a black revolutionary socialist organization active
in the United States from 1966 until 1982. The Black Panther Party
achieved national and international notoriety through its involvement
in the Black Power movement and U.S. politics of the 1960s and 1970s.
Gaining national prominence, the Black Panther Party became an icon of
the counterculture of the 1960s. Although the Party emerged from black
nationalist movements, ultimately, the Panthers condemned black
nationalism as "black racism" and became more ideologically focused on
socialist revolution without racial exclusivity. They instituted a
variety of community social programs designed to alleviate poverty,
improve health among inner city black communities, and soften the
Party's public image. The Black Panther Party's most widely known
programs were its armed citizens' patrols to evaluate behavior of
police officers
and its Free Breakfast for Children program. However, the group's
political goals were often overshadowed by the criminality of members
and their confrontational, militant, and violent tactics against
police.
Federal Bureau of Investigation Director J. Edgar Hoover called the
party "the greatest threat to the internal security of the country"
The New Black Panther Party for Self-Defense (NBPP) is a U.S.-based
black political organization founded in Dallas, Texas, in 1989.
Despite its name, NBPP is not an official successor of the Black
Panther Party. Members of the original Black Panther Party have
insisted that the newer party is illegitimate and have firmly
declared, "There is no new Black Panther Party".
The New Black Panther Party is currently led by Hashim Nzinga. Malik
Zulu Shabazz announced on an October 14, 2013 online radio broadcast
that he was stepping down and that Nzinga, then national chief of
staff, would replace him. Chawn Kweli, who, initially, served as NBPP
national spokesman replaced Nzinga as national chief of staff. Still,
the NBPP upholds Khalid Abdul Muhammad as the de facto father of the
movement. When former Nation of Islam (NOI) minister Khalid Abdul
Muhammad became the national chairman of the NBPP from the late 1990s
until his death in 2001, He, Shabazz, and many other, breakaway
members of the NOI followed minister Muhammad to the NBPP during this
period. Nzinga served as personal assistant to minister Muhammad.
In April 2010, Malik Zulu Shabazz appointed French Black leader
Stellio Capo Chichi as the representative of the movement in France.
Capo Chichi has been holding the position of head of the francophone
branch of NBPP.
The Anti-Defamation League, the Southern Poverty Law Center, and the
U.S. Commission on Civil Rights consider the New Black Panthers to be
a hate group. Suspect breakaway are within The Mexican Cartell Drugs.
