Question: Why are there so many helicopters hovering over Pinellas
County? When we were up in Clearwater it would happen, day and night.
And, it is happening in St. Pete also.

Sometimes in the day or middle of the night a helicopter will just
hover for several minutes in one place, not going anywhere. I can't
remember the last time I saw a helicopter hover completely in place
for so long, but it happens all the time here.

Can't be traffic at 1am. Can't be tourists. Crime... Did the police
department buy choppers instead of squad cars? What gives?

I'm stretching to answer here, but could it possibly be the USCG? They
have a large operation in Clearwater near the St. Pete airport.

I am betting that it is the USCG as well. I'm currently in Va in the
Hampton Roads area (Norfolk/Va beach/Newport News/Williamsburg) and we
have all of the military branchs here. There are helicopters that fly
and do exercises all of the time, day or night. Hovering is one of the
things they do also.

One of my neighbors is a helicopter pilot. He works for the FAA. Once
I realized it was him buzzing our neighborhood I stopped worrying
about the helicopters.

Pilots have to maintain a certain number of hours for their icenses.
Between the FAA, the USCG, the AFB and all of the private pilots in
the area, there's no shortage of air traffic.

IIRC, the sheriff's department has a helicopter. If they're hovering
over your neighborhood at 3AM, better hope you remembered to lock your
doors.
A couple of years ago we had an experience with the 3AM
helicopter-over-the-back-yard thing. A few minutes later we heard
voices back there. It was the police, with dogs. Apparently somebody
had been held up coming out of a restaurant, and the thug hid in our
yard for a brief period while we were asleep. CREEPY.

Yes, the Pinellas County Sheriffs Office has several helicopters that
fly out of a substation at St Pete/Clearwater Airport. You may not be
able to see the "SHERIFF" markings from the ground, but they should
still be distinguishable by the white and green markings. The Coast
Guard helicopters are obviously white and orange and easily
recognizable.

Beyond that, you have fairly common helicopter traffic with the Army
and Navy Blackhawks flying through the area, BayFlight helicopters and
the small Robinson R22 trainer helicopters.

Ah, good points... I imagine the USCG St. Pete sector stays pretty
busy. Good chance this is who it is.

I also notice we're getting a lot of single engine type flyovers
in/out of Albert Whitted. I don't consider it a nuisance though, I'm
something of an aviation buff.

In the Ybor City area of Tampa, helicopters start flying at about 1am
and do so until after 3am, sometimes until 4am, especially on weekend
