Big closure weekend for the Alaskan Way Viaduct and Aurora Bridge

From SODO to Fremont, much of State Route 99 in Seattle will be closed this weekend while crews inspect and reinforce the Alaskan Way Viaduct and upgrade expansion joints on the Aurora Bridge.

Alaskan Way Viaduct closures

  • Both directions of SR 99 between the north end of the Battery Street Tunnel and the West Seattle Bridge will close at 6 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 6.
  • SR 99 will reopen by 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, two hours before the start of the Sounders FC match with Portland at CenturyLink Field.
Southbound Aurora Bridge lane closures
Further north on SR 99, crews will close lanes on the Aurora Bridge to replace and repair three expansion joints. The expansion joints run the width of the bridge, allowing sections to expand and contract. This flexibility helps bridges better withstand earthquakes. Crews are fixing the expansion joints as part of a seismic retrofit of the Aurora Bridge.
  • Southbound SR 99 will be reduced to one lane across the bridge between 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7.
  • At 2 p.m. Sunday, crews will open a second southbound bridge lane.
  • At 3 p.m. Sunday, all southbound bridge lanes will be open to accommodate fans heading to the Sounders FC match.
  • At 7 p.m. Sunday, southbound SR 99 will again be reduced to one lane across the bridge. All southbound lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 8.
Northbound Aurora Bridge lane closures
  • Northbound SR 99 will be reduced to one lane across the bridge between 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, and 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7.
  • At 7 p.m. Sunday, crews will open all northbound bridge lanes to accommodate traffic leaving the Sounders FC match.
  • At 10 p.m. Sunday, northbound SR 99 will again be reduced to one lane across the bridge. All northbound lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 8.
Drivers should plan for increased congestion in and near downtown Seattle. WSDOT recommends leaving early, carpooling or taking transit. Drivers can check traffic conditions before they leave at www.wsdot.wa.gov/traffic. Up-to-the-minute traffic information is also available via the voice-activated driver information line, 511.
Milepost 31 Speaker Series Oct. 4 – Protecting structures along the SR 99 tunnel route

Please join us at the next installment of our speaker series at our project information center in Pioneer Square, Milepost 31. Safety is WSDOT's number one priority on the SR 99 Tunnel Project. This includes protecting buildings, utilities and roadways above and near the tunnel route. Learn how advanced technology will allow WSDOT to keep a continuous eye on the ground around the tunnel before, during and after construction.

6 to 6:30 p.m.
Thursday, Oct. 4
Milepost 31
211 First Ave. S., Seattle
Admission is free.
